Since 2010 Out of the Box Collective has made it easy for busy people to eat well at home by curating the best local, organic produce, sustainable meat and fish, and delicious grocery staples -- and by giving our clients the recipes and tools they need to meet their food goals.

Our online platform lets people customize their boxes, and we pack and deliver thoughtfully selected groceries and meal kits to customers' homes throughout Southern California. We have recently added Home Chef services, and will soon introduce nutritional counseling so that we can create a truly individualized food experience for our customers.

To support our growth we want to hire a Senior Food Planning and Operations Supervisor.  This is an exciting growth opportunity for a dedicated professional with good language skills, a demonstrated interest in organic and small batch foods and food producers, and a commitment to top service.

About the role:

The Senior Food Planning and Operations Supervisor is a supervisory role intended to oversee the planning and execution of our weekly deliveries, as well as managing our chef services and helping expand our team as we grow.  This is a growth opportunity intended to introduce you to the key areas of our business: liaising with Chef Service Customers, planning boxes and menus and budgeting our spend, and overseeing the smooth execution of the weekly packing operation.

The candidate will be involved in the ordering process, creating the weekly insert which is included in every set box, and also the planning and defining of our different boxes on our online platform.

Ideally the candidate will also spend some time familiarizing himself/herself with our warehouse and pack operations, which happen over the weekend, to ensure systems are working smoothly and the team is set up to succeed.

The candidate will also help liaise with our Chefs, and Chef box customers, and develop “recipe kits” for them to choose from.

Over time, the candidate will help with new hires as the team grows, and oversee their training and ensure their work is up to standards.                                  


This is an important job serving a high-end clientele with high expectations.  You should have strong verifiable experience preparing recipes and menus, ordering and ensuring proper distribution of ingredients so the home chefs and personal chefs have what they need, liasing with the ordering team, suppliers and clients, and recruiting new personal chefs and team members and training them based on our company expectations. Our ingredients are all curated from boutique regional small-batch producers and organic farmers who emphasize sustainability and quality.


You should be comfortable with technology including Google Docs, Excel, Slack, Marketman, and (ideally) Canva, or another graphic editing program for producing attractive menus. You should be a strong leader, well connected in the local food and chef community, and be able to help us expand the team.

Desired Qualifications:

Minimum 2+  years cooking experience plus supervisory experience.  

Culinary education is a plus

Passion for local food, and our local community of growers and makers

A solid understanding of healthy cooking

Personable, approachable and able to accommodate a wide variety of food preferences

Energetic, hard working & committed to the success of the team

Strong time-management skills and sense of urgency in the warehouse

Strong awareness of what’s happening in the warehouse and ability to see the bigger picture of what needs to get done

Highly organized with the ability to plan

Willingness to learn and challenge yourself on a daily basis

Strong communicator with the team, and chef customers

Experience managing or mentoring/training others is ideal

Experience writing and designing exciting menus

Comfortable in a fast paced, focused environment

We are looking for a PRODUCTION TEAM LEADER to oversee our weekly pack on Sat - Sun, and on Friday receive deliveries at the warehouse and prep/organize all the packing labels & materials etc.  If it’s the right person, when biz allows, they could also handle the produce ordering on Tues/Wed, (if they go full time Mon/Thurs would be days off)…  There will be a training period til they can fly solo… We have 2 “mantras” at OTB. 1: “Stay in the solution”.  2: “Check and double-check everything”

Skill set: 

  • Great attention to detail needed (lots of elements go into these boxes).  To minimize packing errors, patience for checking/double-checking, packing audits, methodical implementation of systems etc. Making sure portions are correct so we don’t run out or have a bunch leftover afterwards.
  • Deep knowledge of produce, and other artisan products too if poss, with the ability to notice straight away if something is wilted or old or not looking great… Nothing so-so can slip through the cracks. The ability to tell the difference between your blood oranges and your cara caras…
  • Great trouble-shooter (inevitably there are issues needing solving every week, we “stay in the solution”.)
  • People skills necessary for managing the packing team, and great teamwork and communication — knowing when to communicate with me about any issues so we can work together to trouble-shoot.
  • The initiative and inspiration to improve systems and identify issues that need solutions
  • Ideally, someone knowledgable about local growers.
